Meet Cathleen Galgiani
Senator Cathleen Galgiani is uniquely qualified to meet the challenges and responsibilities of serving on the Board of Equalization representing District 2. This diverse BOE district covers 23 counties from the Oregon border to San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.
In the State Senate, Cathleen Galgiani serves on key committees that oversee California’s businesses and seek to expand California’s economy. Senator Galgiani is a member of the Senate Committees on Business, Professions and Economic Development; Insurance, Banking and Financial Institutions; and Government Organization. She also chairs the Select Committee on Policy Alignment and State Government Efficiency. She previously served on the Joint Legislative Audit Committee which performs critical oversight of the use of taxpayer money.
Senator Galgiani has helped create jobs in California and impose fiscal responsibility and efficiency in government.
Economic Growth and Innovation
Early in her career as a legislative consultant, Cathleen Galgiani helped launch California’s 10th University of California, UC Merced. Cathleen helped create the Small Business Enterprise program for California’s High Speed Rail Project – ensuring that opportunities from advances in new technology are shared with California’s small business enterprises, growing the economy for everyone.
In the state Senate, Cathleen Galgiani has worked to expand opportunity and economic growth, experience that will benefit families, businesses and entrepreneurs throughout BOE District 2.
Environment & Tourism
The counties within BOE District 2 have created hundreds of tourist attractions that help generate $117.5 billion in income from 251 million visitors each year. With 700 miles of Pacific coastline, environmental protection is vital. Senator Galgiani helped enact Proposition 1, the Water Quality, Supply and Infrastructure Action of 2014, which provided $7.5 billion in funding for water quality, groundwater clean-up, water recycling and habitat restoration projects.
Cathleen Galgiani was appointed by Governor Brown to serve on the California Delta Protection Commission whose mission is to protect and restore the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
Our Agricultural Economy
The fertile ground in BOE District 2 is the growing area for a majority of California’s 400 agriculture commodities and has some of the most diverse selections of wine in the world.
This district includes the counties of Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Colusa and Yolo.
Senator Galgiani has deep understanding of California’s agricultural economy. She serves as Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee and Chair of the Select Committee on California’s Wine Industry.
The Right Experience
Cathleen Galgiani has served in the California State Senate since 2012 and previously served in the State Assembly. She has been a leader in protecting kids from online predators, providing mental health care services for youth, including youth in the LBGTQ community, and winning funding for frontline law enforcement officers.
Prior to her election to public office, Cathleen worked for former First Lady Sharon Davis, Congressmember John Garamendi during his tenure as Insurance Commissioner, former State Senator Patrick Johnston and former Assemblymember Barbara Matthews.
Cathleen spent eight years as a physical therapy aide in hospitals where she worked with patients recovering from strokes and other debilitating injuries.
Cathleen Galgiani understands that training tomorrow’s workforce and preparing them for the global economy is critical to being competitive in the 21st century’s dynamic job market. She has been a strong advocate for our local schools and Career Technical Education, supporting some of the most important policy measures to prepare our students for the jobs of tomorrow. Having served on the Assembly Higher Education Committee and as a current member of the Senate Education Committee, Cathleen Galgiani knows that investing in our students today will pay dividends in the future.
Cathleen Galgiani served for a combined 10 years on the Transportation and Housing committees in the State Assembly and State Senate and knows that a solid statewide infrastructure is key to our safety and economy. That is why she supported landmark legislation to invest critically needed funds to fix our crumbling roads and highways.
With homelessness at record levels, and a housing market that continues to be exceedingly restrictive, Cathleen supported a bipartisan package of legislation aimed at stimulating the construction of new housing, including affordable housing, throughout California.
